Dr. Alex McCourt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Trained as a public health lawyer, he combines legal research with empirical methods to study instances in which law plays a role in shaping health. He applies these methods to studies of firearm policy and violence, COVID-19 policies, opioid policy, and policies shaping access to health care. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. McCourt serves as Assistant Director of the Center for Law and the Public's Health and Director of Legal Research for the Center for Gun Violence Solutions. He also teaches a course on Public Health Agencies. He received his PhD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and his JD/MPH from the University of Arizona.
