Dr. Schoenborn is a geriatrician and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a health services researcher. Her research has focused on decision making and communication around de-implementation of care, mostly around stopping routine cancer screening in older adults with limited life expectancy, but has also involved studies on deprescribing of medications in diabetes, dementia, and consideration of tradeoffs in cardiovascular prevention.

Dr. Schoenborn’s research has used mixed methods, including qualitative interviews, surveys, secondary data analysis using US national cohorts with linked healthcare claims data (Medicare), and stated preference research methods. She has studied the perspectives of both clinicians and older adults, including the first studies eliciting patient preferences to improve communication about cancer screening cessation. Ongoing projects including the study of messaging about over-screening for cancer and the bioethical considerations around the use of persuasion in doctor-patient communication.
